A short walk from Burton Hall down the hill brings you into North Tawton, an old town on the River Taw, where farming and wool mills were once the main industry. Now farming remains central to the area, along with the local cheese factory producing award winning cheese which can be bought in the factory shop. In the town there are local shops - post office, Spar, pharmacy, deli/cafe and gift shop. There are four pubs - some offering food, a cafe serving delicious breakfast/lunch, a pizza/kebab take away and an excellent fish and chip shop.
There are several lovely walks along footpaths and quiet lanes and by the River Taw.
The popular Sculpture School which offers a range of courses is only 5 minutes drive away.
Although not absolutely essential, a car is recommended if you want to travel around the area.
There is a bus service to North Tawton from Exeter, where there's a railway station and coach station. Exeter Airport is about 20 miles away.
