A private flat in part of a unique wooden house
Date of stay July 2017 (East Wing Apartment)
A private flat in part of a unique wooden house. I loved reading about the history of the place and Jean was kind enough to offer a sneaky peek of the main house too. Everything was clean, tidy and comfortable with fully fitted kitchen, a nice big sofa, a comfortable double bed, a great shower and a fantastic view! The flat is close to the A30 so perfect for exploring Dartmoor or a bit further afield.
Lovely cabin, lovely holiday...thank you!
Date of stay May 2017 (The Cabin)
We loved our stay in the cabin, it was the perfect place to stay for a relaxed few days away. Communication with the owners was fantastic, who were happy to accommodate your stay in any way. We were also greeted with homemade scones, jam and cream which were delicious!! Thank you Jean for allow us a lovely few days away in your cabin!
A delightful place to stay
Date of stay May 2017 (East Wing Apartment)
Burton Hall is a delightful place to stay, a fascinating building. The accommodation was ideal for us (two couples) with two good size en-suite bedrooms. The apartment was warm and clean. Jean is very friendly and met us upon arrival and advised us on the local eateries, there is a fantastic fish and chip shop in the village which which is the best chippy in the world, fact! Some great pubs nearby too. We will be using this gem as our Dartmoor walking base again for sure. Highly recommend!
Ideal location for the Sculpture School
Date of stay February 2017 (East Wing Apartment)
This is a very comfortable apartment in a large and historic wooden house. I was on a course at the local Sculpture School and this was the perfect base. The main sitting room is huge and well fitted out with a good kitchen, dining and sitting areas. There is a big TV and a wood burning fire if I hand wanted it. In fact I didn't need to light it as the house was very snug and comfortably warm. I was pleasantly surprised to find a scone and cream tea ready to welcome me. There are great views out over the town towards Dartmoor and as the house is set above the town, it is very quiet. The garden is ' a work in progress' but will be very pleasant to sit in once summer arrives. The bedroom and shower room are both comfortable, clean and well fitted out. All in all, a very comfortable base for four days and I would have no hesitation in recommending Jean's place to anyone.
Cosy, peaceful setting

Very cosy, spacious cabin, perfect way to see in the new year. The cabin was kept very clean and had all the necessary amenities and was lovely and warm. The hosts were lovely and very accommodating. Would definitely recommend and will hopefully be returning ourselves in the summer to enjoy the local walks and towns.

Spacious, warm and comfortable apartment. Just the place to see our Devon family over Christmas. Unique house, such tall ceilings!
Beautiful views and welcoming owners
Date of Stay - October 2016 (East Wing Apartment)
We stayed in the East wing of Burton Hall. We arrived to a lovely cream tea set up for us. The accommodation is perfect; clean, comfortable and equipped with all necessary items. Excellent Wi-Fi connection and fantastic local fish and chip shop. Wonderful views over Dartmoor and friendly owners happy to show us around the rest of Burton Hall which was very interesting.
A Fantastic Place to Stay
Date of Stay - September 2016 (The Cabin)
The Cabin was everything the description promised and more! It is warm, clean and comfortable, very well equipped and in such a fantastic location. Jean and Martin are fabulous hosts. It was so nice to have a personal welcome to the property and to learn about the history of the hall. They are very approachable and clearly love the area. The scones were such a lovely surprise after our journey! We had a lovely circular walk from North Tawton and there were many more we could have taken. We visited Bude and Croyde Bay (another wonderful circular walk from here takes you along the coast path). We would thoroughly recommend Kirsty's in the town for excellent breakfasts (vegetarian option available!) and fabulous baking! We had a wonderful time here and would have no hesitation in recommending the Cabin to anyone. We hope to return soon!
Time to relax
Date of Stay - July 2016 (The Cabin)
Lovely property on the edge of Dartmoor. Very relaxed and we felt well cared for. Completed some nice walks within the area. We didn't move the car from the moment we arrived until time to depart - perfect for us. The nearby town of North Tawton has all you would need. The whole area is peaceful and we felt our somewhat depleted batteries were recharged! Cabin was just what we needed and in good condition, well equipped. Owners were friendly without being intrusive and scones on arrival were a real treat.
Charming house with great views, very friendly and understandable hosts
Date of Stay - July 2016 (East Wing Apartment)
Before our stay we had a friendly email exchange with the owner. When we arrived, we were fascinated by the unique look of the house - old Norwegian architecture and carvings. We found the East Wing Apartment carefully renovated, maintaining the original charm of the rooms. You may have the chance to get invited and view some of the other rooms with wonderful ceilings and doors. The kitchen was well equipped, all appliances incl. Wi Fi, TV, DVD were working flawlessly, temperature and flow of the shower could be well controlled. We enjoyed great views over the village to Dartmoor either from the garden or the bedroom window, the changing light made for variety. This is an absolutely calm place with no sounds of traffic, perfect for relaxing or as starting point for hiking. Detailed OS maps covering the Dartmoor area and mid-Devon are provided. Within walking distance there is a surprisingly well sorted supermarket, a butcher and several pubs. Definitely our recommendation to stay with a five star+ rating.
Truly unique building. Lovely hosts. Wonderful!
Date of Stay - July 2016 (East Wing Apartment)
The property and location are stunning. The history of the building was fascinating. Our hosts were very welcoming and helpful. The apartment was well laid out and fitted with modern bathroom and kitchen. It was really comfortable and warm and the log fire just added to the ambience. Fantastic high walls and big windows so lots of light and sun! Our hosts were really lovely. Very warm and welcoming and were happy to share with us the history of the building. Had great views and such a quiet and peaceful location. We intend to return as soon as we can!
Our holiday in North Tawton, Devon
Date of Stay - June 2016 (The Cabin)
Our stay at The Cabin at Burton Hall was all we hoped it would be and was as good as described on the website. We were warmly welcomed by the owner who had provided tea and coffee and lovely cream scones for us to relax and enjoy after our 3 hour trip. We found the cabin clean and fully equipped with all we needed for a comfortable breakaway. The view across the valley in stunning. The location is ideal for travelling around Devon with easy access to many attractions in Devon where we visited Clovelly on the coast, Dartington Crystal, the Dartmoor wild ponies and as I am an avid cyclist thoroughly enjoyed the many cycle trails around Devon. I would definitely return to Burton Hall and would recommend it to anyone wishing a holiday in the lovely Devon countryside.
Large size, excellent facilities and beautiful location
Date of Stay - June 2016 (East Wing Apartment)
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay except for the weather. However, the size and facilities of the property enabled us to enjoy spending more time in the accommodation whilst it rained. The cooker, microwave, fridge and dishwashing facilities enabled us to enjoy our food, etc. The TV had many channels which we enjoyed. The double bed was incredibly comfortable.
Lovely, light and spacious
Date of Stay - May 2016 (East Wing Apartment)
A lovely light and spacious apartment with stunning views. Central for exploring Devon, easy striking distance of Dartmoor and coast. Would highly recommend.
Date of Stay - January 2016 (The Cabin)
Our weekend at The Cabin was great, well presented, clean and well equipped, we had everything we needed. There are wonderful views and we were warm and comfortable. We did a couple of walks one from the Cabin and one a little drive away. There was plenty of information and maps for walking and days out. Ate in at Graylings fish and chip restaurant/takeaway, very good. I would definitely recommend and would hope to return one day. The owners are very friendly and informative, the history of the main house is fascinating.
Cosy cabin with fantastic views
Date of Stay - November 2015 (The Cabin)
Me and my partner stayed here for two nights, and absolutely loved it. The cabin itself was very clean and comfortable, everything was high quality from the bathroom towels to the furniture, and the views over Dartmoor were amazing. Although not far from the main house of Burton Hall, it feels secluded, and was so peaceful. Jean welcomed us on arrival, she was very helpful, and had already put the woodburner on for us, plus the cabin has central heating so it was nice and cosy despite being very cold outside! There were DVDs, jigsaws and books for a rainy day, plus several maps for walks - we went up to High Willhays and Yes Tor, the views were great, but be careful on a windy day! Overall it was a lovely stay that I would absolutely recommend.
Perfect for a short stay
Date of Stay - August 2015 (The Cabin)
Cute little cabin, perfect for a short stay
A relaxing getaway holiday
Date of Stay - July 2015 (The Cabin)
The accommodation is more spacious than it appears in the picture, with beautifully simple decor and all the comforts you need for a relaxing getaway holiday. We especially enjoyed the privacy of the little garden and the sense of being surrounded by open countryside. The local town is small and interesting and not at all touristy. Lovely walks, and easy access to a lot of Devon's resorts. We came away with a real hope of returning as soon as possible.
